The sculpture is designed as an impressive feature on entering the airport by road. It also commemorates the airmen who lost their lives at the airfield when it was used as a navigation training centre during the Second World War.
 

The sculpture is approx 6 metres high and weighs 1.5 tons.

This 1:15 scale model was made for the client prior to the manufacture of the sculpture.
